Is Your Bathroom Sink Drain Clogged? How to Fix It Yourself Before You Call a Drain Cleaner in Reno

Is your Bathroom Sink Drain Clogged and draining slower than molasses in January?

If you live in the Reno / Sparks NV area and are looking for a plumber to come unclog your drain, you can try some DIY first on it first.

If you don’t have a lot of DIY skills you basically have 2 choices for fixing your clogged drain.

1) Use a drain cleaner chemical
2) Use a natural drain cleaner
3) Use a plunger
4) Take the pipes apart and clean out the gunk to get the drain flowing freely again.
5) Call a local area plumber to come do it

Drain Cleaner Chemicals
The first choice is the one most people start with. You can find drain cleaning liquids in most any store for a few dollars. You can probably find some at a local Reno area dollar store too.

This might be all you need to get the clog undone and the water flowing again.

But more than likely a drain cleaner won’t do the job …at least it won’t do it very well.

All Natural Drain Cleaner / Uncloggers
Drain cleaners are usually toxic so you don’t want your kids or pets near them. You can also find recipes for natural drain cleaners on the internet that might do the job.

But chances are that if a high powered corrosive chemical won’t unclog your bathroom sink drain then an all-natural one isn’t going to do it either.

But you never know, so if you want to try an all natural drain cleaner there are plenty of easy to follow recipes and instructions that will help you out.

If you’ve tried chemical and natural drain cleaners and you still have standing water in your sink there’s one more thing you can try without having to take anything apart.

Use a Plunger to Unblock a Drain

If you are going to use a plunger to try and unclog your bathroom sink drain, it’s best to get a brand new one that’s never been in your toilet before.

You can find smaller versions of plungers made specifically for sinks in a local hardware or home store for this job.

To use the plunger try the following steps.

1) Remove the sink stopper – If you leave the stopper in you might be closing it when you push the plunger down which isn’t going to do you any good.

2) Add a bit of water to the sink – You need the plunger to create a seal, so add some water to the sink to help the plunger get a good grip.

3) Seal and plunge – With the water in the sink the plunger should easy create a suction seal around the drain opening. With the plunger sealed up plung up and down 15-20 times.

The act of plunging should shove the blockage down the pipes. Take the plunger out and see if the water is still standing or draining slowly.

Is your bathroom sink drain still clogged?

If so, then you’re going to have to take the pipes apart and clear the blockage manually. This is the last thing you can attempt to do yourself to unblock your drain, so it’s time to get dirty and get that drain fixed!
